JAKE WATCHED HER EXPRESSION as it morphed from confusion to frustration. The corners of her mouth tightened and her eyebrows first raised, and then knit together over the bridge of her nose. She looked beautiful even when annoyed, more beautiful than she had looked while lying in the tank, unaware and apparently dead. Oh, she had looked lovely then. He hated to admit it, but he'd found her enchanting in death —or near death, or whatever her true state had been. Hours had passed during which he did nothing but gaze at her face, somewhat blurred by the liquid that surrounded her, and wonder what she must've been like when alive.

She had been a princess, he'd decided. A daughter of the pharaoh, the greatest beauty in all the land, admired by noblemen and commoners alike. Every man had wanted to marry her. Every woman had wanted to become her. She was glorious, incandescent, awe inspiring. All right, he could admit to himself that his musings had turned into a rather sappy fantasy that no real woman could live up to. The reality of this woman, however, had left him flummoxed. She turned out to fall so far from his imagined princess that he wondered how he could still find her so enchanting.

He intended to buy her a meal too, and take care of her until this situation was resolved. He had no idea how to resolve it, at least not yet, but he would figure it out. He must. After all he'd done for her, and everything he would do for her, how could she stare at him as if he were the worst kind of criminal?

Well, he had sedated her. He supposed that did give her good reason to mistrust him. And perhaps his fantasy of her, and her failure to live up to it, clouded his judgment a little.

"Why?" she asked, with that distrustful tone in her voice.

For a moment, he couldn't recall to what she was referring. He stared at her with an expression that must've bordered on utter blankness. Then he remembered and said, "Oh, you mean why would they kill you simply for being alive."

She rolled her eyes. "Duh."

He winced a little. No incandescent princess in this room. "There are laws against experimenting on human beings without their consent, so I'm sure that's part of the reason. You might sue them or have them arrested. But I think mainly they believe that if you're alive, it invalidates their research. The company has spent millions of dollars on this project and —"

"Why?" When he just stared at her, she
